Orchestre Franck Tortiller, Électrique
Electric…that is the concept behind the latest program of Franck Tortiller’s Orchestra. A repertoire of premieres which reminds us that the electrification of instruments was a revolution in sound in the 1970s, notably for jazz musicians such as Miles Davis (on his albums Bitches Brew, On the Corner), Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters, Joe Zawinul and Weather Report.
It is in this spirit and aesthetic that Franck Tortiller, still accompanied by the award-winning musicians that made Close to Heaven, such a success, is blazing a new trail in composing for jazz orchestra. The orchestra becomes, in a sense, an “electric circus” where exploration, the mixing of sounds and rhythmic positioning, drives the creative process forward.
The energy comes from the dynamic interaction, at the heart of the orchestra, between the acoustic instruments – joined here by Joel Chausse on trumpet – and the electric instruments. Vincent Limouzin, with his Midi vibraphone, brings a wide palette of harmonic and melodic color, using purely synthesized sounds. Patrice Héral, the wonderful rhythmic jack-of-all-trades, uses live loops, samples and other effects. And last but not least, Claude Gomez, brilliant inventor of sound samples and electronic universes, joins the group to add his definitively electric and poetic touch.
